BONZA BOWLING
Haverhill travelled to Copford, near Colchester to play a game that will be recorded in our clubs and the associations history book for some time to come. Having one the toss on a pitch that can only be described as less than favourable to batsmen I asked Copford to bat first.
Copford played somewhat aggressively to some sharp opening bowling from Joe Woodley and myself. Earlier indications of the pitch were bounce and movement off of the seam which spelt trouble for Copford from the second ball to their final ball which came just after 18 overs had been bowled.
Joe Woodley continually tormented batsmen with the swinging ball having many batsmen play and miss When he did straighten his line the Copford batsmen had no answer to his pace and good length, ending his spell with 3 wickets for just 11 runs off of 7 overs.
Although most Australians shy away from any centre stage I will do my best to just stick to the facts. The combination of a swinging ball and Copfords aggressive batting allowed me to get into a good confident bowling rhythm early and with Joe W assisting at the other end I picked-up the remaining wickets with figures of 7 wickets for 12 runs off of 9.1 overs.
I was supported very well by the fielders with a tricky rising catch to our keeper Neil “Croc” Wallis, a flying first slip catch by Simon “lost a few pounds” Youngs, and a precision, almost laid back, well struck, catch to Adam Delar.
Copford out for a club and divisional record of 10 for 35.
Simon Youngs and Neil Winter opened the innings for Haverhill. Simon (9. N.O) played his usual well placed shots but ran out of time to build an innings due to the batsmen at the other end not wishing to draw out the game any longer than necessary.
Neil Winter (30 N.O) played some cracking flat, hard hit drives through the off side to bring the game to a very quick close. The last over he faced, a bowling change that brought on a young leg spinner, saw Neil hit the bowlers first ball for six and then continue to hit him to all corners of the ground. The bowler ended with one over for 18 runs.
